Sierra Vista Elementary

Part of the Clovis Unified School District

Music Program

Our school offers students the chance to develop skills in instrumental music through formal music education in grades five and six.  Our band, orchestra, and choir students perform at festivals and for school performances throughout the year.

Mr. Baber - Band Teacher

You may contact Mr. Baber at CameronBaber@cusd.com

Our band program at Sierra Vista provides 5th and 6th-grade students with the opportunity to explore a variety of instruments, including the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion, in a collaborative group setting. Students are encouraged to meet high-performance standards through independent practice and taking personal responsibility for their progress. They can showcase their growth throughout the year by performing in our winter and spring concerts.

Mr. Cameron Baber has been teaching elementary band and classroom music in Clovis Unified since 2023. He began his musical journey as a student at Riverview Elementary School (Go Rams!) and continued playing throughout high school until he switched to the oboe during his junior year at Clovis North. Mr. Baber earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from California State University, Fresno. Since 2018, he has worked with several musicians and music programs throughout the Central Valley, including Clovis North High School, Clovis High School, and Buchanan High School. Additionally, Mr. Baber helps instruct the Bulldog Marching Band, Red Wave Indoor, and teaches private lessons for the oboe.

Mrs. Humphrey - Orchestra Teacher

You may contact Mrs. Humphreys at emilyhumphreys@cusd.com

Orchestra at Sierra Vista introduces the violin, viola, cello, and double bass in a group setting to 5th and 6th grade students. Orchestra students are held to high levels of expectation and performance via self-driven practice outside of the classroom and personal responsibility. Students have the opportunity to perform several times throughout the school year and will also participate in rated concerts.

Mrs. Emily Humphreys has been teaching elementary orchestra in Clovis Unified since 2016. She started playing string instruments in elementary school and switched instruments several times through middle and high school before choosing to study the double bass in college. She holds a BA in Music Performance, emphasis on the Double Bass, and an MA in Music Education from Fresno State University. She has wanted to be a music teacher since she was 14 years old. She recently married another music teacher/bass player, and she lives in Clovis with her husband and two cats.

Ms. Claiborne - Choir Teacher

You may contact Ms. Claiborne at morganclaiborne@cusd.com

Sierra Vista’s Concert Choir is a place for 5th-6th grade students to explore vocal music from various parts of the world, spanning many different time periods and genres. In choir, students learn about vocal technique, focusing on how to produce the best and most unified singing in preparation for the various performances they have throughout the school year, including two choral festivals at the Performing Arts Center at Clovis North, two performances on campus, and a community outreach performance.

Ms. Claiborne has been teaching choir and classroom music at Sierra Vista since Fall 2024. She has been involved in choir ever since she was in 5th grade at Dry Creek Elementary, continuing to the choir programs at Alta Sierra, Buchanan, Fresno City College, and Fresno State. She holds a BA in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Music Education - and for the first half of her teaching credential program, she was a student teacher under Amy Scott, who previously taught at Sierra Vista for 11 years before becoming the choral director at Clark Intermediate. Currently, Ms. Claiborne’s main focus outside of teaching is being involved with music ministries at New Hope Community Church.
